During the exam the dentist will evaluate your overall oral health by visually inspecting the inside of your mouth. Your bite and jaw will also be examined. X-rays may be taken. If the dentist identifies an area of concern, he or she will develop a treatment plan to address those issues. At the conclusion of the exam, the dentist or hygienist will perform a cleaning and remove stains or deposits. After the exam has been completed, the dentist will review the treatment plan with you or the responsible party and schedule any necessary follow-up appointments. The visual inspection and x-rays will help the dentist assess your risk of tooth decay, root decay, and gum or bone disease as well as your potential need for tooth restoration or replacement. All new patients are required to have an exam by the dentist; thereafter, patients are required to have an exam every six months unless otherwise dictated by the doctor.
